Bipartisanship is Impeachment

I really want Biden’s first term to be filled with bipartisanship. It’s been annoying some of my more liberal friends. But I have had enough of the divisive snipping, the watching what you say around conservative family members, and the hang-ups in congress over things that should be a thing we all want, like Covid-19 funding.

This last week since the Capitol riots have led to increased calls for bipartisanship. Mostly from the GOP congressmen who do not want impeachment. This has caused me to consider the true nature of bipartisanship. GOP congress members seem to think that its Democratic Party leaders are turning over on every major issue. Liberal democrats seem to think that too. In my perfect naive world bipartisanship is when we all come together to accomplish something great. However in this reality bipartisanship might just be making sure the USA stays the USA.

Over the last 2 months the GOP has launched a partisan assault claiming voter fraud was the only reason they lost (and they didn’t lose). Culminating in the Capitol attack. Their claims are so divorced from reality that it’s impossible to argue any part of them seriously. Instead democrats should focus on punishing the insurrectionists and preventing it from happening again. They can do this by removing their leader through impeachment, encouraging the installment of a new leader from the same party by invoking the 25th amendment like Mike Pence, censuring the people who have encouraged them, and encouraging local and federal law enforcement to arrest the main actors and their co-conspirators. The Democratic Party has already done all these but censure.

As a symbolic step maybe the GOP could perform some bipartisan steps. They could censure the main bad actors, pass the $2000 Coronavirus stimulus plan, and adopt a resolution stating that the Democratic Party did not engineer any election fraud and that any suggestion of such is absurd. They have not done any of this. Instead have chosen to spread lies that GOP politicians, Qanon, and white supremacists who invaded after listening to inflammatory rhetoric were not responsible and complain that they cannot bring their guns to “protect” the congresspersons who they threatened with gallows and incited mob violence against.

A bipartisan act is one that is supported by both parties. In this age of identity politics it seems impossible. But currently there are 3 political parties. Democrats, republicans and the Qanon/white supremacist/ reality denying supporters of the last administration. We only need to be bipartisan with people who are dedicated to defending our nation, our capital, and our legally elected officials. We do not have to kowtow to people who are currently denying that they were the ones in the Capitol when we have their twitter feeds showing us their true colors. Hopefully we will not let this nonsense stop us from repairing a country in need. We must rise above and do what is best for the country.
